Birthday Cakes

Having three birthdays within 5 days of each other can get pretty interesting sometimes. This year we decided to have a birthday party celebration for both boys on the first Sunday of November. Just a few days after Ethan's birthday and about a week after Eric and Ammon's. In trying to give the boys each something of their very own I made Ethan and Ammon their own birthday cakes (Eric didn't care to have his own as long as he got to eat cake). To save money I made them myself and I'm very proud of the result because I'd never decorated a cake before and Ethan wanted Batman (big surprise) and Ammon loves Thomas the Tank Engine.

Here's pictures of the results.

I did Ethan's first because it was easier. Yes I was able to make black frosting. I did it by using Dark Chocolate and adding lots and lots of blue and red food coloring. Thank you Art class!

Here is is all finished. I printed his name so that he could recognize it. I found it harder to print than to string the letters all together.

Here's Ammon's it was a lot harder than Ethan's but sooo worth it. Ammon loved it!

I even put tracks all around the outside.

I actually found a Thomas Candle at Toys R Us. After that got placed on top Ammon wouldn't stop trying to get at the cake. After he blew out the candles we gave him the Thomas Candle and he actually try to run it all long the tracks on the side of the cake. It really smudge the frosting, but at that point who cared! They just wanted to eat it and I have these pictures of my work anyway. He's still playing with the candle today and cries when we try to take it away. As long as he doesn't try to eat it I say he can have it.

It's amazing the creativity that comes from being poor. These are Amazing!! Much better than anything I have ever tried. We have resorted to cookie cakes because they don't shed in the iceing.
